In September of 2004, I visited the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. It is located on the National Mall and opened to the public on April 29, 2004. It was a very bright, sunny day, so I had a perfect opportunity to take some photographs of the beautiful memorial.
The entrance of the memorial is marked by an impressive block of sculpted granite. Several beautiful water features are shown in the slideshow. Two pavilions mark the Pacific and the Atlantic theaters of World War II.
Each granite pillar commemorates a state or territory that participated in the war. The 4000 gold stars on the Freedom Wall commemorates the more than 40,000 Americans that perished for the war.
